Clacton-On-Sea
Clacton-On-Sea
Introduction
Clacton-On-Sea (or simply, Clacton) is a seaside town on the on the Essex coast in the east of England. It is situated about half an hour's drive or train journey away from the historical city of Colchester and about an hour and a half by train from London Liverpool Street. London Stansted airport is about an hour away by coach from Colchester. The port of Harwich is some 15 miles away. The town makes for a perfect day out in summer for the whole family or for couples and solo travellers. There is a fair selection of hotels and other accommodation for people who'd like to stay longer or visit for holidays or vacation.
Clacton has miles of sandy beaches, which run from Jaywick Sands in the east to Holland-On-Sea in the west. It is possible to walk or cycle the whole stretch of coastline. Slightly further afield lie Frinton and Walton-On-The Naze. Local bus services are frequent and go to other areas such as Harwich, Colchester, St Osyth and Point Clear as well as to Frinton and Walton. From Point Clear in summer it's possible to catch a small ferry to picturesque Brightlingsea.
Clacton's main attraction is the pier, which was opened in 1871. There are rides and amusements on the pier and in summer, a big wheel which affords wonderful views to the west of the pier over the sea.
There are plenty of bars, pubs and cafes for refreshments and in summer, live entertainment too. There is a choice of restaurants too offering simple menus to moderate and high class venues.
History is evident here, ranging from the two Martello Towers to Billy Butlin's reception that is now a small pub (for sale if anyone's interested!). Butlins holiday camp was here back in the day, but alas is no more. Locals remember their holidays at Butlins and take pleasure in telling visitors all about their experiences in from their younger years!
Throughout this site, we will be writing about places to stay, where to go and more details about how to get to Clacton-On-Sea, the surrounding areas and eventually, all of the Essex coast. Stay a while and enjoy!
